The sacrament of confirmation completes the sacrament of baptism. If baptism is the sacrament of re-birth to a new and supernatural life, confirmation is the sacrament of maturity and coming of age. This confirmation in the power of the Holy Spirit leading to a firm profession of faith has always been the particular effect which Catholic tradition has ascribed to the sacrament. It is effect which complements and completes that of baptism.
THE CHURCH TEACHES:
Confirmation is a true sacrament instituted by Christ and different from baptism. It is administered by laying-on of hands and anointing with chrism accompanied by prayer. The chrism is consecrated by the bishop and the bishop usually administers the sacrament. All baptized persons can and should be confirmed. The effect of the sacrament of confirmation is to give strength in faith and for the confession of faith and to impress an indelible character.

As every candidate knows, a Sacrament is an outward (visible) sign instituted by Christ to give grace. Therefore it is important we focus on both the outside appearance and the internal conversion during all of our Sacramental ceremonies. At the Sacrament of Baptism we wear special gowns, the Sacrament of First Communion we wear white dresses or suits, and at our Marriage we wear formal gowns or tuxedos. It is with this same consideration that we consider our outward appearance during the Sacrament of Confirmation.
While the church greatly respects the uniqueness and individuality in each of its members, it holds that modesty is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and that “Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 25234)
It is in this spirit of fostering respect for each other and for the sanctity of the Sacrament of Confirmation that we set forth a code of dress consistent with our culture’s view of modesty. Semi-formal, modest attire is appropriate to the solemn beauty of this occasion.
The liturgical color for Confirmation is red, to signify the Holy Spirit who confirmed the apostles on Pentecost and gave them courage to practice their faith. Catholics believe that the same Holy Spirit confirms us during the Sacrament of Confirmation and gives us the same gifts. Therefore it is suggested your child wear some red on this special day, but not necessary. For young men, it is traditional to wear a red tie. For young ladies, a red dress, a red sweater or other accent is suggested. White is also acceptable.

A Confirmation retreat is an important and meaningful part of the Confirmation journey. It gives students a special opportunity to step away from their usual routines and focus on their relationship with God, the Holy Spirit, and their faith.
During the retreat, students will spend time in prayer, reflection, discussion, and activities designed to help them better understand the Sacrament of Confirmation and prepare their hearts to receive it. It is also a chance to build community with fellow candidates and grow spiritually in a supportive environment.
Because the retreat is an essential part of preparing for the Sacrament, attendance is required for all Confirmation students.
The experience cannot be replaced, as it is designed to help students reflect, listen, and grow in ways that regular classes cannot.
We appreciate your understanding and support in helping your child fully prepare for this important step in their faith journey.
